In June 1985, Rajiv Gandhi became the first Indian prime minister to address the joint meeting of the Congress. “Our task today is to bring India to the threshold of the 21st century,” he said. “Free of the burden of poverty which is the legacy of our colonial past, and capable of meeting the rising aspirations of our people.”
Mr. Gandhi also said India supported independence for Afghanistan – then occupied by troops from the Soviet Union. American experts took this remark positively, as India had until then been quiet about Soviet presence
